Thoughts from our Mentor Ben

'I learnt that we all have amazing qualities apart from our stammers and we should not let the stammer define us'

Each year The Fluency Trust offer the opportunity for a young person to return on the course as a mentor, to share their experiences and support others.
This year Ben joined us as mentor, spending time with both the Teens group and the Blockbuster group. His support was valuable and we really appreciate all his efforts.

Here are some thoughts from Ben

In my time at Skern Lodge as a mentor, I met amazing young people and learnt that my stammer is all about perspective. From being taught football by eleven year olds, supporting both teens and blockbusters in therapy and being capsized three times during kayaking (don’t worry it is safe), I learnt that we all have amazing qualities apart from our stammers and we should not let the stammer define us. Instead, we should focus on our positives. I have been privileged to help them realise this and although being a mentor was difficult (pretending to know what you are doing in front of young people is never easy), it was a rewarding experience. Good luck to the future.

Bike Ride Challenge for The Fluency Trust

The Fluency Trust Residential 2018

What a week it's been- the course kicked off in spectacular fashion with the bridge jump- our young people well and truly stepped up to the challenge. They continued to challenge themselves and step outside their comfort zone during the week, ending the week with the ultimate speaking challenge, emotional speeches and songs round the camp fire.  Every year these young people never fail to amaze us...

Paula Adamson raises £270 for The Fluency Trust

The Fluency Trust would like to thank Paula Adamson, for raising an amazing £270 running the Bristol 10k. A much needed boost for us.

Paula said-'I wish to give something back to The Fluency Trust. Last year my son attended their residential course at Skern Lodge,North Devon. The course made a huge difference to his life and taught us, his family, a great deal about the challenges of living with a stammer.
On the 13th May 2018 I will be taking part in the Bristol 10K. This will be the furthest distance I have raced for 12 years! and quite a personal challenge. I will have to ditch those "junk thoughts" and harness some "cool thoughts" to get around the course,
Please help The Fluency Trust change the lives of other youngsters again this summer and keep their courses running by sponsoring me in this challenge'.

If you would like to donate to the Fluency Trust please click our donate button on www.thefluencytrust.org.uk
